What is Vegan?
- Vegetarianism is the practice of a diet that excludes all animal flesh, including poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, and slaughter by-products. It is a diet. For many vegetarians this simply means not eating meat, although many variations abound.
- Veganism is a lifestyle, not just a diet. The fundamental idea is to refrain from eating AND using all animal-derived foods and products.

Vegan Sweetener Issues
- Honey is often not considered vegan since it is derived from bees.

- Cane sugar may or may not be vegan depending on how it is processed. Some cane sugar is filtered through "bone char" which is charcoal made from deceased animals. Even though animals are not raised or slaughtered to make bone char, it nonetheless uses an animal product to refine the sugar.
- Beet sugar is acceptable because bone char is NEVER used.
- Maple syrup, maple sugar and date sugar are also acceptable.
