Mono-unsaturated fat is found in olive oil and is a key component of the Mediterranean diet.

People who adhere to this diet have been found to have lower rates of heart disease despite consuming a high fat content.

So not all fat is bad.  Certain ones, like monounsaturated can be very helpful.

According to the American Heart Association a Mediterranean diet has these characteristics:

  • high consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds
  • olive oil is an important monounsaturated fat source
  • dairy products, fish and poultry are consumed in low to moderate amounts, and little red meat is eaten
  • eggs are consumed zero to four times a week
  • wine is consumed in low to moderate amounts
