There is a recent article in the Medical News Today that looks at a study published in the journal Agricultural Economics. The study found that those who read food labels when shopping, especially women, usually weigh less. The study went on to say that body mass index (BMI) for women is markedly lower than for those who read food labels. They used information from the CDC’s National Health Interview Survey which contained over 25,000 bits of data about people’s shopping and eating habits.
One thing they found was that only about 58% of men review the food labels when shopping while compared to nearly 75% of women. The men who read food labels however don’t seem to enjoy the same reduction in body mass as the women. The authors of the study hope that this encouraging information will help to reduce obesity in the US. Actively reading nutrition labels is a very simple way to get started on following a healthier diet.
At Awesome Natural Foods we encourage everyone to read the label. Our all natural flavored almond snacks have all the nutrition clearly printed on the label. Our Awesome Almonds contain only all natural ingredients, have no artificial colors and no Trans fats and are a perfect addition for the heart healthy diet.
There is an article on the Harvard School of Public Health [www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/index.html] that contains ten healthy eating tips. A few of them are very helpful in cutting through, what they explain as, the confusion that nutrition articles sometimes cause. For instance the first tip is to eat good carbs, not zero carbs. Whole grains, vegetables, fruits and beans are listed as the good carbs that give you energy for another important health helper – exercise.
Beans are also a healthy source of protein along with nuts, fish and poultry. Avoiding red meat is recommended for heart health reasons and the risk of certain types of cancer. The article also recommends consuming healthy fats like those found in our favorite all-natural snack – the almond.
Delicious, all natural almonds are a good source of healthy fats, protein, fiber and other nutrients but it is important to note that they are not a panacea. A healthy diet requires a balance of natural foods to ensure that your body gets all of the nutrients it needs to function properly. Visit our website to get some delicious almond snacks to add to your diet but make sure to add a variety of other healthy foods and get adequate exercise as you work toward a healthier lifestyle.
The primary reasons for dieting usually revolve around improving looks and health. Dieters tend to limit their calories for as long as it takes to lose the desired weight and that is where the goal of improved health may take a detour. The dieter sees that fats have a lot of calories and tend to cut fats and carbs in an effort to lose weight.
Your body does need a certain amount of fats to keep you healthy so elimination of all fats is not a good idea. Monounsaturated fats, found in olive oil and canola oil, can be used in cooking to help make food taste better while being heart healthy at the same time. Monounsaturated fats help reduce cholesterol and can also help lower blood pressure.
Trans fats and saturated fats, like those found in palm oil, margarines and other spreads are not heart healthy. Any dieter, whether trying to be heart healthy or not, should stay away from these.
Dieters looking for a heart healthy diet can often use some help in the snack area. That’s where our favorite all natural snack the almond comes in. Almonds contain heart healthy monounsaturated fats, have zero Trans fats and they taste delicious. Visit the Awesome Natural Foods store to order some of our delicious, all natural almond snacks today.
A recent study performed by Boston Children’s Hospital compared three commonly followed diets – low fat, low carb and low glycemic. The study had 21 overweight subjects reduce their weight by eating fewer calories to drop about two pounds a week. After losing weight they participated in the three different diets for four weeks at a time.
The low fat diet yielded some positives in metabolic rate but researchers believe that it could increase the risk of eating more and cause subjects to ultimately gain weight. The low carb diet produced the highest gain in metabolic rate but researchers found chemicals in the bloodstreams that indicated higher levels of stress and inflammation so this diet may be harder on the body. The overall winner was the low glycemic diet which increased the metabolism about half as much as the low carb diet but without any signs of increasing bodily stress.
One great addition to a low glycemic index diet is the delicious almond. At Awesome Natural Foods we feature a variety of flavored, all natural almond snacks that can help quell in between meal cravings without ruining your diet. Our delicious natural snacks prove that opting for a better diet doesn’t have to mean making sacrifices when it comes to flavor.

The USDA revealed its new guide to nutrition this past June. It was felt that the advice for following a healthier diet may be a bit easier to understand when looking at something familiar like a plate rather than at the pyramid. To make things even easier when it comes to adopting a healthier diet the USDA has developed the MyPlate website that provides access to plenty of nutrition information.
The MyPlate website has plenty of information about the food groups and the benefits that the foods that fall into those groups have to offer. Some foods can be found in a number of different sections depending upon the essential nutrients and health benefits they provide.

If the obesity numbers continue to rise at the current rate experts predict that there will be upwards of 164 million obese Americans by the year 2030. What makes these numbers even more alarming is the fact that obesity increases the risk of a wide variety of very serious health conditions. An increase in obesity rates in the US will very likely lead to a greater number of Americans suffering from heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.
The prediction of 164 million obese Americans doesn’t necessarily have to become a reality though. Some very simple lifestyle changes for those who are at risk can make a profound difference in weight and overall health.

Christmas may have come and gone, but there are probably still a number of holiday gatherings in your immediate future. Holiday parties are great for catching up with family and friends, but if you’re not careful they can wreak havoc with your diet.
If you know that you are going to be heading to a party that will have a veritable buffet of delicious (but less than healthy) treats, take a healthy snack with you to help manage your hunger. Doctor Oz recommends carrying a small bag of nuts in your purse or pocket to snack on while you’re hungry. Peanuts, cashews and almonds are super easy to transport and high in protein and fiber and they’ll help fill you up so you don’t feel the need keep revisiting the colorful cookie tray.
Those of you that can’t help but find a way to satisfy your sweet tooth at holiday parties can still do so in a healthful way. Instead of carrying plain almonds in your bag, carry a small bag of all natural Awesome Almonds® with you. A handful of orange vanilla or cocoa-java Awesome Almonds® will provide the same filling fiber and protein that plain almonds or cashews would, but you’ll get the added benefit of curbing your sweet cravings as well.
Sticking to your diet can certainly be a challenge, but planning ahead and being prepared to healthfully deal with cravings can help minimize the damage without putting a damper on your holiday fun.
Awesome Almonds come in three great flavors
A recent study conducted by researchers at Duke University Medical Center – National University of Singapore reveals the possible physical benefits of instituting a tax on sugary soft drinks.
According to the study, adding a tax of twenty percent to all sugar laden sodas purchased through stores could result in more than half a pound of weight loss per person on average over the course of a year. Raising that tax on soda to forty percent could potentially result in an average of a pound and a half of weight loss per person over the course of a year. Though a forty percent tax sounds astronomical, the estimated cost to the average household would be under thirty dollars per year which is a pretty small price to pay for better health.
Even slight increases in price could convince many families to forego soda in favor of healthier options, which could be a huge step forward in the fight against obesity. It can be difficult to monitor everything that your children eat and drink, but eliminating the amount of unhealthy options available in your home would certainly be a good start.
There are plenty of great tasting, healthy snacks and beverages available. Stock your fridge and cupboards with all natural foods and drinks, rather than empty calorie junk foods and sodas and you’ll be taking the first step to put your family on the right track to good health.
