A recent study followed two age groups through school focusing on obesity rates for each group. One group consisted of fifth graders and the other group was in the eighth grade. These groups were compared because eighth graders had over an 86% availability of junk food in their schools while the fifth graders had about 59% availability.
The two groups followed did not show any real variance in obesity levels. It seems that more junk food available did not necessarily mean more eighth graders were going to become obese. The researchers explained this by illustrating that children in school don’t have a lot of extra time to be eating food. They concluded that eating habits at home could be the real culprit in explaining higher obesity rates among children.
Researchers also concluded that eating habits are formed before children reach middle school and focusing on those preschool eating habits might be an answer to lowering obesity levels. Children learning to like foods at a young age can be important in shaping their eating habits for the rest of their lives.
